| Obituary- Deckard, Gladys Mrs. Gladys Deckard
HOLTON – Mrs. Gladys Deckard, 93, Valley Falls, died Saturday, Jan. 14, 1989, at a Holton nursing home.
She was born Aug. 25, 1895, in the Swabville community northwest of Valley Falls, the daughter of Wil¬liam Isaac and Nannie Catherine Ly¬ons Ferrell. She attended Swabville Grade School and Valley Falls High School. She was a lifelong resident of the Swabville and Valley Falls communities.
Mrs. Deckard was a member of Coal Creek United Methodist Church north of Valley Falls, the auxiliary to Grahem-Herbers Post No. 3084 of Veterans of Foreign Wars in Valley Falls and Valley Falls Senior Citi¬zens. She was a charter member of the Swabville Club and a former member of the Swabville School Board.
She was instrumental in establish¬ing the Rural Electric Association in the Swabville community and Home Demonstration Units in Jefferson County. She was a member of Live and Learn Demonstration Unit more than 50 years.
She was married to Roy F. Deck¬ard Feb. 16, 1916, at Valley Falls. He died Aug. 12, 1961. She also was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Eva Dena Deckard.
Survivors include a son, Melvern Deckard, Atchison; four daughters, Anita Everett, Canon City, Colo., Wilma Brandt, Waukesha, Wis., and Margaret Smith and Winona Deck¬ard, both of Valley Falls; two sisters, Ceola Cain, Valley Falls, and Almira Swisher, Delia; nine grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Coal Creek United Methodist Church north of Valley Falls. Burial will be in Valley Falls Cemetery. Mrs. Deckard will lie in state after 2 p.m. today at Nellis-Hagge Funeral Home in Valley Falls where relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today. Memorial contribu¬tions may be made to Valley Falls Rescue Squad.
