    Obituary- Burns, Julia
    Obituary- Burns, Julia
--28 Nov. 1928; Pioneer Resident Passes Away
Mrs. Julia Burns, aged 66 years and 9 months, died at 7 o'clock Friday evening, Nov. 16, at her home on he reservation following an illness of about two weeks duration. Her death was due to pneumonia and other complications.
Mrs. Burns was one of the earliest of the settlers of Rossville township when it was owned by Pottawatomie allotters. Her allotment was an 80 acres east of Rossville on which the Rossville cemetery now is located. Originally her father the last Peter Navarre built the family home supposedly on her land but later it was found to have been set on railroad land and he had to purchase the land on which the house stood. That is the present Mason 80.
She was the daughter of Peter and Ellen Navarre, and born at South Bend, Indiana, in 1861. She hcame to Kansas with her parents in 1866 from South Bend. They came by rail to St. Joe, Mo., where their horses and wagons were unloaded and the balance of the trip to Rossville made overland. The whole of the Kaw Valley was then prairie ground.
In 1882 she was married to Joseph Burns. Seven children were born to this union, all of whom survive with the exception of one daughter Mrs. Nora Murray who passed away several years ago. The survivors are; Louis, of Rocky Ford, Colo., Mrs. Edith Martin, Willard; Edna, of Mayetta; Mrs. Mamie Nugent, Dover; Mrs. Ola Martin, Willard; Raymond of Mayetta. There are three brothers, Jerome Navarre of Rossville; Louis Navarre, Harrah, Okla.; and Frank Navarre of the home address.
With the exception of the years spent in Oklahoma and on the reservation, Mrs. Burns had always considered Rossville as "home", having spent the bulk of her 62 years in Kansas in or around Rossville.
Funeral services were held in the St. Stanislaus Catholic Church of Rossville, the Mass sung by Rev. Father Smidt. The body was interred in Rossville cemetery. The pallbearers were four nephews, Peter and Joseph Navarre, Kermit and Osto Patton and two grandsons, Jams Murray and Ralph Martin
Out of town relatives here for the funeral included Mr. and Mrs. Louis Burns and family, Rocky Ford, Colo., Louis Navarre, Harrah, Okla., Mrs. Belle Lutz, Kansas City, KS., Mr. and Mrs. Harold Navarre and Mrs. Jerome Navarre, of Topeka
NOTE: headstone notes DOB as 2/16/1863

We desire to express our sincere appreciation of the many acts of kindness and consideration shown us in our time of sorrow and thanks to all who sent floral offerings. --Joseph Burns and family
