James McMullen DeVinney, aged 81 years, 2 months and 28 days, died at Topeka, Monday, Jan. 16 at 10 a.m. after being bedfast for several weeks from a broken hip bone. The funeral service was held in the Rossville Methodist church yesterday at 2:30 p.m., conducted by Rev. Basquin. Hundreds of old friends and neighbors gathered to pay their last respects to this pioneer settler of Rossville township.
The pallbearers were Willard Montgomery, Joseph Parr, Carroll Gutshall, Paul Small, Lance Jamieson and George Vawter, members of Venice Doud Post, American Legion. The body was interred in the family lot in Rossville cemetery.
Mr. DeVinney was a native of Summitville, Columbiana county Ohio, where he was born Oct. 18, 1840. While quite young he moved to Ross county, Ohio, where he remained until he came to Kansas. He was married to Miss Heppie Connor, May 27, 1861, at Athens, Ohio. In 1862 he enlisted in the Seventh Ohio Battery and was in the engagements at Murfreesboro, Franklin, Vicksburg and Mobile, Alabama. He was mustered out in 1865 at Camp Dennison, Ohio. He returned to Ross county where he remained, engaged in farming, until coming to Kansas in the spring of 1880, locating at Rossville, on the 80-acre farm adjoining Rossville on the west.
Mr. Devinney was a fine farmer and took great pride in keeping his property in trim condition. Up until a couple of months before his death, Mr. DeVinney had lived in his cottage on Green street. The original home residence was sold several years ago.
Mr. DeVinney is survived by his daughter, Mrs. H.F. Pratt of 1118 Taylor street, Topeka, and Two grandchildren, Mr. Dudley Pratt of College Station, Texas, and Miss Esther Pratt, of Topeka
