| Obituary- Gilchrist, James James J. “Jim” Gilchrist
James J. "Jim” Gilchrist was born October 12, 1942 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota the son of Kenneth and Maxine (Beasley) Gilchrist. The family moved to Topeka and he graduated from Seamen High School in Topeka.
Jim served his country from 1960 - 1963 in the United States Navy. Following his military service Jim was in law enforcement serving the public for the Topeka Police Department retiring as a lieutenant. He then worked for the Topeka Public Schools as the head of school security retiring in 2005.
On May 31, 2001 he married Kristine Pagenkopf in Branson, Missouri. She survives of the home. Other survivors include his son Scott Gilchrist of Topeka; stepson Mike Schmersey of Rossville, Kansas; stepdaughter Kelly Schmersey of Abilene; two grandsons Brent and Tyler. He was preceded in death by his son James W. Gilchrest in 1988 and his parents.
Jim passed away Monday, September 3, 2012 at his home in Abilene. Private memorial services were held in the Ft. Leavenworth National Cemetery with Reverend Justin Panzer officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or to the Faith Lutheran Church and may be sent in care of the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, 414 NW 3rd, Abilene, Kansas 67410.
