| Obituary- Hook, Benjamin Benjamin M. Hook Jr.
SILVER LAKE – Benjamin Murrah Hook Jr., 77, Route 1, Silver Lake, died Thursday, March 6, at a Topeka hospital after he suffered an apparent heart attack.
Mr. Hook retired from farming in the Silver Lake area in 1973.
He was born March 1, 1909, in Silver Lake, The son of Benjamin M. and Emma Bartlett Hook Sr. He attended Silver Lake public schools and was graduated from Silver Lake High School in 1926. He lived in the Silver Lake area all his life.
Mr. Hook was a member of Silver Lake United Methodist Church, helped organize and was a chairman of Shawnee County Rural Fire District No. 1, a former Grove Township treasurer, a charter member of Silver Lake 4-H Club, member of Silver Lake Booster’s Club, Topeka-Shawnee County Civil Defense and American Association of Retired Persons. He was known as the Bubblegum Man.
He was married to Hannah Hulsopple Oct. 14, 1933, at Carleton, Neb. She survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Vera Leiker and Mrs. Barbara Renfro, both of Silver Lake; two sisters, Mrs. Vera Howell, Topeka, and Mrs. Norma Wood, Shawnee Mission, three brothers, Guilford W. Hook and Howard D. Hook, both of Silver Lake, and Maynard C. Hook, Topeka; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home in Topeka. Burial will be in Silver Lake Cemetery. The family will meet with friends from 3 until 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
