• Documents » Slide Show		Obituary- Hook, William V. 1 W. V. HOOK A long time friend and a good man passed quietly from our midst Wednesday morning, when W. V. Hook was found dead at his home, where death had over taken him as J he sat in a rocker beside his cook stove. Mr. Hook had been in poor health for some time, but able to be about town each day and seemed to enjoy life to the fullest extent. He passed his 81st year this summer. For a number of years he had entertained a large number of friends and neighbors at his home on each birthday anniversary and looked forward to the annual event with pleasure. He was born in Tecumseh in 1857 and was the first white child born there, and was the oldest living native of this county. Mr. Hook has been a resident of Shawnee county his entire life. He retired from active farming about 35 years ago and since had lived in Rossville. Mr. Hook was converted early in life and for a long time was an active member of the U. B. church north of Rossville and officiated with worship at the church for a number of years. After moving from his farm to Rossville he united with the local Presbyterian church and has been a faithful supporter of his church at all times. In 1877 he was married to Miss Rose Ann Miller and to this union, nine children were born; five of whom survive. Mrs. Hook, passed very suddenly about thirty years ago in their home on Navarre street. After some years he married Mrs. Mina Neiswender of Silver Lake, and they continued to live at the old home, until just a year ago when she passed away.
  		Obituary- Hook, William V. 2 He is survived by five children, Lowell Hook, Mrs. Sam Martin of Topeka; Mrs. Golda Harshbarger, Rossville; Mrs. Frank Conlan, Miami, Fla., and Dr. Fred Hook, Pearl Harbor, Honolulu; thirteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Funeral services were held this Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Presbyterian church, with Rev. Naismith of Lawrence officiating. Music was furnished by a soloist, Mr. Francis Ball accompanied by his mother, Mrs. Golda Ball of Topeka. The pall bearers were, Morris Bond, Fred McCollough, Albert Reser, Frank Zook, Davie Davis and C.E. Cless. Burial was in the Rossville cemetery.
  		Birthday- Hook, William V. Mr. and Mrs. W.V. Hook entertained a large number of relatives and friends at a noon luncheon Sun. in the city park in honor of Mr. Hook's 72nd birthday anniversary. Gov. Clyde M. Reed had been invited up for a short talk. He arrived about an hour later than expected and many people had left the gathering before his arrival. However he spent a delightful hour following his talk on topics of interest to the pioneers and their descendants, in meeting the individuals in the gathering. Gov. Reed is an interesting talker. The city band played a number of selections early in the afternoon. Mr. Hook who is the oldest native born citizen of Shawnee county had the time of his life greeting old friends from his boyhood home at Tecumseh and scores of others from communities surrounding Rossville.
