Topeka shooting death an apparent suicide
A 48-year-old North Topeka woman apparently shot herself in the upper abdomen early Saturday as her 61-year-old boyfriend watched, officials said.
The woman, Mary J. Lacock, later died at a Topeka hospital.
Emergency personnel responded to a 911 call at 2:06 a.m. to Lacock's mobile home at 126 N.W. US-24. They found Lacock on the living room floor. Rescue workers said a single small-caliber bullet entered the upper abdomen and exited through the back.
Police recovered a weapon at the scene.
A Medevac MidAmerica ambulance crew worked several minutes to stabilize Lacock before transporting her to St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center. She underwent surgery there, but died at 4:55 a.m.,
[missing portion and part that doesn't belong]
Dr. Robert D. Jensen, Shawnee County deputy district coroner, performed an autopsy Saturday. Jensen said Lacock's death was a probable suicide, but a final ruling will not be made until forensic test results are received.
