Hilton W. Nuffer
LAWRENCE – Double services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence for Mrs. Christa Graham “Sweet Pea” Nuffer, 40, and her husband, Hilton W. Nuffer, 51, both of Route 4, Lawrence. They were found Sunday, May 5, 1991, at their home following an apparent murder-suicide. Douglas County authorities said Mr. Nuffer shot his wife to death with a shotgun then killed himself with the weapon.
Mrs. Nuffer was a truck driver for Kaw Transport in Kansas City, Mo. Mr. Nuffer was a truck driver for Graham Trucking.
Christa Nuffer was born Aug. 11, 1950, in Delia, the daughter of Frank and Irene Richmond Fleming.
Hilton Nuffer was born Aug. 5, 1939, in Lawrence, the son of Paul and Emma Buchheim Nuffer.
Mr. Nuffer was a member of Teamsters Local No. 641.
They were married Nov. 19, 1989, in Silver Lake.
Christa Nuffer is survived by a son, Ronald D. Fleming, Parsons; her father, Frank Fleming, Mayetta; her mother, Irene Fleming, Topeka; a brother, Ronald Lee Rice, Mentone, Calif.; and three sisters, Letty Fleming and Edwina “Wendy” Razo, both of Topeka, and Linda Dority, Kansas City, Kan.
Hilton Nuffer is survived by a son, Michael Nuffer, at home; two stepsons, Greydon Walker and Richard Walker, both of Lawrence; his parents, Paul and Emma Nuffer, Lawrence; and three grandchildren.
Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence. Relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center or to the Douglas County Visiting Nurses Association in Lawrence.
