Joel Richard Simpson, 41, Topeka, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1993, at a Kansas City, Kan., medical center from injuries he suffered Monday afternoon in a one-vehicle accident on Douglas County Road 1055.
Mr. Simpson was a mechanic for 11 years for the city of Lawrence. He was an over-the-road trucker and presently was employed by Lawrence Ready Mix Industries in Lawrence.
He served nine years in the Army including 26 months on the DMZ in Korea.
He was born July 27, 1952, in Topeka, the son of Thomas M. "Shorty” and Helen M. Lord Simpson.
Survivors include three sons, Tulsa Simpson, Robert Simpson and Andy Simpson, all of Lawrence; his mother, Helen M. Simpson, Topeka; three sisters, Margaret "Peggy" Woehr, St. Marys, Louise Johnson, Lenexa, and Eileen Langley, Topeka; and two brothers, John Simpson, Bonham, Texas, and Daniel Simpson, Topeka.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Parker-Price Mortuary. Military graveside services will be conducted by Topeka North Post No. 400 of the American Legion in Rossville Cemetery. Mr. Simpson will lie in state after 10 a m. Friday at the mortuary where family and friends will meet from 7 until 8 p.m. Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Simpson Children's Education Fund in care of Kaw Valley State Bank and Trust, P.O. Box 8009, 66608.
■ Topeka man dies from crash injuries — A Topeka man injured in a Douglas County traffic accident Monday died Tuesday at a Kansas City, Kan., hospital.
Joel R. Simpson, 40, suffered a head injury and died Tuesday afternoon at the University of Kansas Medical Center, a hospital spokesman said.
According to the Douglas County Sheriff's Department, Simpson was driving a Lawrence Ready Mix cement truck south on county road 1055, between Lawrence and Eudora at 1:40 p.m., when he lost control and it overturned.
