  		Marriage- Juran, Marie-Smatla, Thomas 2 Miss Marie Juran and Tom Smatla were married last Tuesday and a large crowd of relatives and friends were present. They will make their home in this community.
  		Anniversary- Smatla, Thomas and Marie Mr. and Mrs. Tom Smatla Observe 60th Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Tom Smatla celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary May 5th. They are the oldest surviving couple of the original Czechoslovakian community which settled northwest of Silver Lake many years ago. Their entire family were home for the happy event. Reverend Tom Smatla and his wife flew from Butte, Mont., and Ben Smatla flew from Jacksonville, Fla. Other children present were Henry Smatla, Meriden, and Edward and William Smatla, Silver Lake. Daughters were Lydia Dailey, Overland Park; Marie DeVeney, Raytown, Mo.; and Alice Kingman, Independence, Mo. A basket dinner was enjoyed by the entire Smatla family. Later in the day their children hosted an open house which was enjoyed by many friends of long standing.

Howard of Topeka. The brother of the bridegroom Rev. Thomas Smatla, of Butte, Montana officiated at the double ring ceremony. Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Howard, Lawrence, and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Smatla, Sr. of Silver Lake. The bride wore a streetlength sheath of pale beige satine trimmed with beige lace. A velvet bow held her short veil. She carried a white orchid with carnations and hyacinths. Mrs. Kathleen Howard and another brother of the bridegroom, William Smatla, Silver Lake, attended the couple. Debra Smith, daughter of the bride, lighted the candles. The couple is at home on a farm near Silver Lake.

  Obituary- Smatla, Edward Edward Emil Smatla Edward Emil Smatla, 85, Silver Lake, died Mon., Feb. 16, 2009, at Midland Hospice House. He was born Aug. 18, 1923, at Maple Hill, the son of Thomas G. and Marie A. (Juran) Smatla, He graduated from Rossville High School. Ed was a cattle and grain farmer. He was a member of the Rossville Presbyterian Church. He was married to Elizabeth Howard Smith in 1970. She preceded him in death on June 20, 2005. Surviving are 2 sisters: Lydia (Dailey) Carl of Prairie Village and Marie DeVeney of Raytown, MO; a brother: Henry Smatla of Meriden; a step-daughter: Debra Like of Rossville; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM, Sat., Feb. 21, 2009, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence. Interment in the Czech-Moravan Cemetery. Ed will lie in state after 3:00 PM, Fri., at the funeral chapel where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
