| Obituary- VandeVelde, August August C. Vande Velde Jr.
SILVER LAKE — August C. “Sonny" Vande Velde Jr., 54, Silver Lake, died Thursday, May 15,1997, in the emergency room at a Topeka hospital.
Mr. Vande Velde was an earth mover band builder for the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. for 32 years before he retired Nov. 1, 1996. He served in the Army National Guard.
He was born May 19, 1942, in Emmett, the son of August C. Vande Velde Sr. and Anita Lemon. He was graduated from Emmett High School in 1960.
Mr. Vande Velde was a member of United Steel Workers of American Local No. 307, St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville, the Goodyear Golf League and Gage North Bowling League. He also coached softball and baseball for his children for 15 years.
He was married to Marilyn A. Fritze on Jan. 12, 1963, in Alma. She survives.
Other survivors include three daughters, Lori A. Campbell and Kristi D. VandeVelde, both of Silver Lake, and Vicki L. VandeVelde, Olathe; a son, Scott M. VandeVelde, Silver Lake; six brothers, Ron VandeVelde, Havensville, Bob VandeVelde, Topeka, Dan VandeVelde, Steve Vande Velde and Rick VandeVelde, all of St. Marys, and Jerry VandeVelde, Lyndon; six sisters, Pat Rezac, Emmett, Mary A. Haug, Topeka, Cathy McDevitt, Lyndon, Anita “DeeDee" Preble, Chandler, Ariz., Nancy Sullivan, Shawnee, and Sandy Brungardt, Overland Park; and five grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville. Burial will be at Silver Lake Cemetery. Mr. VandeVelde will lie in state after 2 p.m. Monday at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home in Topeka where relatives and friends will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish prayer service will be recited at 7 p.m.
