| Obituary- Vawter, Mary 1 Mary E. Vawter
Mary E. Vawter, 74, passed away last Friday morning about 5:30 at her home following a lingering illness of several months.
She was born January 1, 1863 near McLain, Illinois. Mrs. Vawter, with her husband and son George, came to Rossville in 1909. Two years later he passed away. He was local manager of the J. Thomas & Co. lumber yard.
In 1917 Mrs. Vawter went in the Peoples State bank as assistant cashier and served for twenty years. Mrs. Vawter made many friends in her church, social and business life. She was a devoted wife and mother and kind and considerate in her relationships with others. She was a consecrated member of the Rossville Methodist church and an active member of the O.E. S. until her health failed.
She is survived by her only son, George M. of Kansas City, Mo., and two sisters; Mrs. Maude Baum, of Tulsa, Okla., and Mrs. Liza Roads of Emporia.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Reed, Monday morning at 10 o'clock from the Methodist church, with an Eastern Star service following the funeral sermon. Music was furnished by a ladies quartet composed of Mrs. Margaret Witter, Miss Maxine Miller, Mrs. E.G. Griswold and Mrs. Peter Navarre.
The pallbearers were Ira Hopkins, F.P. McCollough, E.H. Gibson, C.E. Gresser, A.F. Buchmeier and C.E. VanVleck.
The body was taken to Burlington, Kansas and funeral services held at 2 o'clock from the William McGuire home. Burial was in the Burlington cemetery where Mr. Vawter was buried.
