  Documents » Slide Show		Marriage- Juran, Marie-Smatla, Thomas 1 Thomas Smatla and Miss Mary [sic] Juran, two popular young people of the Bohemian neighborhood were granted a license to wed last Thursday by the probate judge at Topeka.
  		Marriage- Juran, Marie-Smatla, Thomas 2 Miss Marie Juran and Tom Smatla were married last Tuesday and a large crowd of relatives and friends were present. They will make their home in this community.
  		Anniversary- Smatla, Thomas and Marie Mr. and Mrs. Tom Smatla Observe 60th Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Tom Smatla celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary May 5th. They are the oldest surviving couple of the original Czechoslovakian community which settled northwest of Silver Lake many years ago. Their entire family were home for the happy event. Reverend Tom Smatla and his wife flew from Butte, Mont., and Ben Smatla flew from Jacksonville, Fla. Other children present were Henry Smatla, Meriden, and Edward and William Smatla, Silver Lake. Daughters were Lydia Dailey, Overland Park; Marie DeVeney, Raytown, Mo.; and Alice Kingman, Independence, Mo. A basket dinner was enjoyed by the entire Smatla family. Later in the day their children hosted an open house which was enjoyed by many friends of long standing.

She was one of the oldest residents of the Moravian community north of Rossville. She was born February 14, 1889, in Posdechov, Moravia, Czechoslovakia, and moved to the U. S. in 1914, marrying Thomas G. Smatla, May 6, 1914, in Rossville. They lived in Maple Hill until 1924, when they moved to the Rossville-Silver Lake area. Mrs. Smatla was on the last boatload of Czech immigrants to the U. S. before shipping was stopped prior to World War I. She was a member of the Rossville Presbyterian Church and the ZCBJ Lodge, Rossville. Survivors include five sons, the Rev. Thomas Smatla, Butte, Mont., Bennie Smatla, Jacksonville, Fla., Henry Smatla, Meriden, Edward Smatla, Silver Lake, William Smatla, Rossville; three daughters, Mrs. Lydia Dailey, Overland Park, Mrs. Marie DeVeney, Raytown, Mo.; one sister, Alice Kingman, Independence, Mo.; one sister, Frantiska Kovar, Bratrejov, Czechoslovakia, 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Services were at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rossville Presbyterian Church. Burial was in the Czech-Moravian Cemetery, north of Rossville. Casket bearers were James Rezac, William Olejnik, George Olejnik, Junior Dannefer and Emial Kovar, all of Rossville, and Joe Macha, Delia. Verschelden Funeral Home, St. Marys, was in charge of arrangements.

  		Birthday- Smatla, Marie Mrs. Smatla celebrates 83rd birthday Wednesday afternoon, February 28th, a group of friends from the Rossville Presbyterian Church gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Smatla to help Mrs. Smatla celebrate her 83rd birthday anniversary. The following were present: Rev. and Mrs. Dwight Seneker, Mr. and Mrs. John Kratina, Sr., Mr. and Mrs. Emial Kovar, Mrs. Stella Lacock, Mrs. James Rezac, Mrs. Henry Badura, Mrs. John Kratina, Jr., Mrs. Edd Smatla and William Smatla. A birthday cake and cookie bars were enjoyed by all.
