Roy Gentry dies of heart attack; was Palomino Club first promoter
Roy Gentry, 56, was found dead Thursday, September 19, in his cattle truck nine miles west of Bonner Springs on the Kansas Turnpike. He was returning from Kansas City with a load of cattle when he suffered a heart attack.
He had purchased the cattle to feed during the fall and winter and had brought two truckloads of calves to his farm from Kansas City the day before.
The Gentry family moved to a farm about three miles east of Rossville about ten years ago from Simpson, Ks., where Mr. Gentry had spent most of his life. He was born April 7, 1901, near Asheville, N.C., the son of Elizabeth and John Gentry, and moved to a farm near Simpson with his parents at an early age.
Roy Gentry was one of the promoters of the Rossville Palomino Club and took a big interest in horses and in the success of the club. He was the first president of the club and this year was serving as secretary of the organization. He took pride in the appearance the club made when it marched in horse shows and parades around the country and eh always took an active part in their own horse show which has been presented each August for the last four years.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church at Simpson, Ks. and a member of the Masonic Lodge and Order of the Eastern Star at Rossville.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Melba Gentry, of the home; two sons, Billy and Bobby Gentry, both of Rossville; two daughters, Mrs. Betty Dick and Miss Barbara Gentry, Rossville; his father, John Gentry, Simpson; three sisters, Mrs. Minnie McClure, Glasco, Ks. Mrs. Joyceline Storz, Muncie; and Mrs. Bertha Krenkle, Alameda, Ca.; three grandsons, Rodney and Randy Dick, and Ricky Gentry.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 in the Rossville Methodist Church, with Rev. Don Jones officiating.
Graveside services were conducted at Rossville Cemetery by Hesperian Lodge No. 111. Pallbearers were Fred Harth, Ralph Page, Home Reid, Frederick Zickefoose, Harry Moyer, and Bennie Dick. Hurley Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
