Leslie G. Hallmark
Leslie G. Hallmark, 70, St. Marys, died Tuesday, May 7, 1996, at the Kansas City Veterans Medical Center, Kansas City, Mo. He had cancer. Memorial services were held Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Piper-Verschelden Funeral Home, St. Marys.
Mr. Hallmark was born August 15, 1925, to Elmer and Jennie June Johnson Hallmark in the Blue Mound area near Lawrence. He attended rural and elementary schools in Douglas County, Ks., and Washington County, Mo., junior high school in Lawrence. He graduated from Wellsville High School in 1943, after which he joined the United States Navy and served in World War II as a gunner’s mate on a merchant ship.
Hallmark married Dorothy Helen Kalb, August 25, 1948, at the First United Methodist Church in Baldwin City. An infant daughter, Mary, died July 25, 1949.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of the home; two sons, David G. Hallmark, Houston, Tex., and Alan B. Hallmark, Richmond, Va.; his mother, Jennie Johnson Thompson; a sister, Irma F. Fine, Lawrence; two grandsons, three granddaughters, two nieces, two nephews, and many friends and other relatives.
In 1954, Mr. Hallmark was graduated from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. He taught in Kansas high schools for 31 years. Before retirement he taught art and mathematics at Rossville High School for 14 years and in Kaw Valley USD 321 for the last 18 years.
After his wife’s retirement, the couple traveled extensively in the United States in their recreational vehicle and also enjoyed touring Mexico. The last three years they wintered in Texas at Citrus Valley RV Park, McAllen.
He was a member of educational organizations, the United Methodist Church, and a life member of the American Legion Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31, Rossville.
In the early 1960s he worked two years for the United States government as an ammunition inspector in Texarkana, Tex.
Memorial contributions may be sent to the Piper-Verschelden Funeral Home, St. Marys, KS 66536, for the Hallmark Scholarship Fund at Rossville High School for college-bound graduating seniors.
