Dwight J. Martinek

Dwight Joseph Martinek, 50, Canton, Tex., died at a resident Tuesday, August 26,1997.

He was born April 10, 1947, in rural Rossville, the son of Bennie J. and Ruth A. Martinek. He was preceded in death by his father, and a brother, “Sonny” V. Martinek.

Mr. Martinek was graduated from Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education. He played professional baseball with the Detroit Tiger organization. He was principal and head teacher at the Delia Grade School, and served as board president of the Kaw Valley Unified School District #321 for 11 years.

He was a member of the Moravan Lodge #128, Rossville; a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council, and St. Therese’s Parish, Canton Tex.

He owned and operated a farm and ranch business and insurance business in rural northeast Kansas before moving to Wimberley, Tex., where he was recognized as a top metal art sculptor. Mr. Martinek’s talents in the field of art were recognized internationally as one of his sculptured pieces graced the entrance to the “Recycle, Re-Seen Folk Art” exhibit at the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe, N.M. in May of 1996. The art will travel on exhibition across the United States and Japan over the next four years.

In 1995, Mr. Martinek and his family moved to Canton, Tex., where he designed, created, and developed the theme park trade days market known as “Wild Willie’s II Mountain.” He was known by the nickname of “Wild Willie.”

He is survived by his wife, Beverly Davis Martinek; one son, Dustin Martinek; his mother, Ruth A. Diehl Martinek; a brother, Douglas F. Martinek; and a granddaughter; all of Canton, Tex.

Mr. Martinek was cremated. A rosary, led by the Knights of Columbus, was said at 6:30 p.m. Friday at St. Therese’s Catholic Church in Canton, Tex. A memorial mass followed at 7:00.

Dwight married Beverly Davis.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly; his mother, Ruth Martinek; one son, Dustin Martinek; one brother, Douglas F. Martinek and one granddaughter, all of Canton, TX.
