Obituary- McClain, Thornton 2
THORNTON MCCLAIN
Thornton McClain, 69, Rossville, died Friday, August 21, 1987, at a Topeka hospital.
Mr. McClain worked in a grocery store as a youth. He farmed in the Rossville area until his retirement.
He was born April 27, 1918, at West Liberty, Ky., the son of Roy and Eva Trimble McClain. He lived in Indiana a few years before he moved with his family to Kansas in 1922. He graduated from Rossville High School and attended Emporia State Teachers College.
Mr. McClain was a member and former president of the Lions Club and member of Hesperian Lodge No. Ill, AF&AM, both of Rossville, and Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge No. 555 at Topeka.
He also served on the Rossville City Council and was active with the Cub Scouts for four years.
He was married to Winifred Emert August 21, 1947, in St. Stanislaus Church at Rossville. She survives.
Other survivors include a daughter, Vickie Sue McClain, Kansas City, Mo.; a son, Larry Morris McClain, Rossville; four sisters, Mrs. Henrietta Preble, Mesa, Ariz., Mrs. Letha Reser, Rossville, Mrs. Mazee Goodrel, Hoyt, and Mrs. Barbara Casto, Ukiah, Calif.; and a brother Luther McClain, Rossville. Two brothers, Vencille and Ora McClain, preceded him in death.
Services were at 2 p.m. Monday at Verschelden Funeral Home in St. Marys. Masonic graveside services were conducted by Hesperian Lodge No. 111 AF&AM, in Rossville Cemetery.
Casket bearers were Bill Martinek, Gene Pelfrey, Russell Minnis, Don Hagedorn, Duane Parr, Louis Martin, Clifford Cormack, and George Stadler.
The family met with friends from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
