Obituary- McElvain, Melville
M.S. McElvain
Death claimed one of Rossville's pioneer settlers, when Melvin S. McElvain, passed on early Monday forenoon. He had been a resident here 68 years, coming here in 1872. Two years later he married Josphine [sic Josephine] Heslet on March 19, 1874. Four children were born to the union three of whom survive.
Mr. McElvain was the eldest of three brothers in his family. He was born in Henry County, Ill, [May] 3, 1850, and would have been [91] years old next May. In his early years here he farmed. After moving to town in the early nineties, he engaged in the produce business and served as mail carrier [missing]
He was a member of the Christian church.
Beside his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Pearl Cless and Ethel Kuelpe of Denver; one son Alfred of [ ]; eleven grandchildren and [ ] great-grandchildren. [Brothers] preceded him in death several years ago.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 1 in the Christian church conducted by G. Hor[ ] of Topeka. Music was furnished by Mrs. Grace Rogers and [M ] Navarre, accompanied by Mrs. Bertha James.
Pallbearers were Messrs. C.W. [ ] baum, Guy Startup [ ] Morris Bond [ ].
