Russell G. Minnis
Russell G. Minnis, 76, Rossville, died Sunday, May 4, 1997, at a Topeka hospital.
He was born April 25,1921, in Ablion, Ida., the son of John R. and Majoria Bowers McArthur Minis. He had lived in Rossville for several years.
He and his family moved to Manhattan from Idaho when he was very young. He was graduated from Manhattan High School and from Kansas State College Division of Veterinary Medicine. He entered the Army and served as a meat inspector in Chicago during World War 2. He was a veterinarian and specialized in large animals until 1965, when he became a federal meat inspector for the USDA.
He retired in 1987.
He had lived in Chicago, Ill., Odesa, Mo., Centralia, Mo., King City, Mo., Red Oak, la., and then in Omaha until the late 1980s. He served on the Rossville City Council for several years. He attended the Presbyterian Church and was a past member of the Kiwanis Club. He was a member of the Missouri Veterinary Association.
On April 9,1944, he was married to Henrietta Ferguson in Manhattan. She died June 4,1981. He married Winifred McClain April 1, 1989, at Rossville. She survives.
Other survivors include a daughter, Roberta I. Bennett, Wichita; a stepdaughter, Vickie S. McClain, Overland Park; two sons, Raymond R. Minnis, Junction City, and Richard A. Minnis, Omaha, Neb.; a stepson, Larry M. McClain, Rossville; and six grandchildren.
A family visitation will be held from 6:30 until 7:30 at Piper- Verschelden Funeral Home in St. Marys on Tuesday (this evening). His service will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Rossville Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Rossville Community Library and sent in care of the funeral home.
