Cecil P. Townsend
Cecil P. Townsend, 85, 938 Winfield, died Sunday at a Topeka hospital.
He was born Sept. 30, 1897, at Albany, Mo., the son of John and Jane Burkhart Townsend. He moved to Topeka in 1919.
He was employed as a watchman for Santa Fe Railway Shops, and retired in 1962.
Mr. Townsend was a member of Oakland Christian Church, where he was the sole member to be named deacon emeritus. He was a veteran of World War I and was stationed in France as a member of the 1st Gas Regiment Association.
He was a 43-year member of the American Legion Capitol Post No. 1.
He married Dolin Darby in Albany, Mo., on Aug. 23, 1919. She survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Faye Kelsey and Mrs. Greta Kelsey, both of Rossville; and two sons, Herbert Townsend and William A. Townsend, both of Topeka; 10 grand-children and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services will be be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Oakland Christian Church. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery. Friends may call at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. Mr. Townsend will lie in state until 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Oakland Christian Church, 1001 N.E. Michigan, 66616.
