Alphonse T. Verschelden
Alphonse T. "Babe” Verschelden, 89, St. Marys, died late Wednesday, December 25,1991, at his home.
Mr. Verschelden was a farmer and truck gardener and supplied watermelons to area businesses.
He was born July 22, 1902, south of St. Marys, the son of Alphonse L. and Anna Meyer Verschelden, and spent his life m the St. Marys community. He attended Strickler's Business College in Topeka.
Mr. Verschelden was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council No. 657, both in St. Marys, and Thomas A. McNeive General Assembly of Fourth Degree of Knights of Columbus.
He was married to Anna Aubert October 5, 1937, in St. Marys. She survives. A daughter, Mary Jo Lacock, died in April 1987, and a grandson, Andy Zeller, died October 19,1988.
Other survivors include eight daughters, Theresa Schleif and Margaret Cunningham, both of Topeka, Alice Zeller, Mayetta, Joan Worrel, Zeandale, Regina Verschelden, Manhattan, Rita Etzel, La Mesa, Calif., Ann Fouts, Ottawa, and Anita Culbertson, Wamego; four sons, John Verschelden, Lebanon, Mo., Frank Verschelden, Topeka, Kenny Verschelden, Rossville, and Joe Verschelden, at home; 36 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial was at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
A rosary was recited Friday at Verschelden Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys.
